Marcelo Adnet, the well-known Brazilian actor and comedian, has voiced strong criticism regarding the current state of social media, describing it as an “extremely toxic” environment. In a recent interview for the “Bate-Papo UOL – Edição Especial Trinta Anos” series, Adnet detailed how platforms that once fostered digital inclusion have transformed into competitive, profit-oriented, and often aggressive spaces.

The Evolution of Social Media

Adnet reflected on the initial promise of social media as a tool for connection and inclusivity. However, he observed a significant shift, driven by the pursuit of engagement and financial gain. This shift, according to Adnet, distorts reality and fuels negativity.

“We discovered that social media is a space where, first, you make a lot of money, and second, you can manipulate information,” Adnet stated. “So, something that started innocently, purely, has become an extremely competitive, profitable, and toxic environment. Today, I say ‘good morning’ on social media, on Twitter for example, and there are eight insults.”

Personal Experiences with Online Toxicity

The comedian shared that he has personally received written threats, particularly during the period when he began incorporating political humor into his work. Adnet believes that humor, especially when directed at those in power, can be a potent tool for deconstruction.

“Because I spoke about politics, imitated politicians and so on, it became something very serious,” he explained. “They understood that humor is an important thing, that you can deconstruct a politician or someone powerful through humor.”

The “Herd Effect” and Manipulation

Adnet also highlighted the susceptibility of users to the “herd effect,” which amplifies uncritical trends and comments. He described a phenomenon where people act without genuine purpose or critical thinking. He drew parallels between sponsored posts and coordinated attacks, likening the online space to a marketplace where “opinion is for sale.” Adnet suggested that without investment, individuals are more likely to face backlash, making the internet a deceptive platform.

“You can’t trust the internet, I think,” Adnet concluded. “Because we can be deceived very easily.”

Passion for Samba and Carnival

Beyond his commentary on social media, Adnet revealed his deep passion for samba-enredo, the musical genre associated with Brazilian carnival parades. He spoke about his journey into samba composition, starting with friends from college for the São Clemente school and expanding his involvement to other schools and cities. He proudly mentioned winning the “estandarte de ouro” (golden banner) for best samba in Porto Alegre and achieving his first carnival championship with Viradouro in Rio de Janeiro. Adnet emphasized the cultural significance of carnival, particularly in Porto Alegre, which he described as having a strong Black culture and hosting “the blackest carnival in Brazil.”

Parental Concerns and Digital Education

Becoming a father has made Adnet prioritize his presence in his five-year-old daughter’s life. He expressed significant concern about her future online experiences and potential exposure to malicious individuals. Adnet intends to closely monitor her entry into the digital world.

“I have a five-year-old daughter and I worry a lot about this,” he said. “The first thing I do for her is presence. I’m here nearby, I’m here every day, I don’t like to be away from my daughter for more than, say, two days.”

He acknowledged the privilege his profession affords him in spending time with his child, contrasting it with the realities faced by many Brazilian parents, particularly single mothers working multiple jobs, who lack the opportunity for constant supervision.
