Mika Figueiredo Reflects on “Difficult to Ask for a Better Start” as Leça Secures Liga 3 Promotion
Young coach Mika Figueiredo discusses his maiden season as head coach, leading Leça to promotion after a challenging start and reaching the Campeonato de Portugal final.

Mika Figueiredo has described his first full season as head coach of Leça as exceeding expectations, stating it was "difficult to ask for a better start." The young manager took over the reins mid-season and successfully steered the club to promotion to Liga 3, with the added prospect of winning the Campeonato de Portugal.
The journey to promotion was not without its challenges. Figueiredo stepped into the head coach role in October, replacing Carlos Pinto, at a time when team morale was low and results were not forthcoming.
A Complicated Beginning
Figueiredo acknowledged the difficult circumstances when he took charge. "It was a complicated phase because confidence levels were low. We weren't getting the expected results, and the club opted to replace the coach," he told A BOLA. "At that stage, the team was very low in spirits and suffering from a lack of self-belief."
Despite possessing a squad with significant quality, Figueiredo noted that even talented players can be affected by a negative run of form. "Even great quality players, when things aren't going their way and results don't appear, tend to have these kinds of thoughts. The lack of confidence affects everyone, including good players." He admitted that even as an assistant coach, he sensed the team's low morale.
Taking the Helm
The opportunity to become head coach arose after Carlos Pinto's departure. Figueiredo initially took charge on an interim basis, leading the team in a 3-0 victory against Gouveia. Following this positive result, club president approached him with the offer to take on the role permanently.
The Most Difficult Moment
The initial period of Figueiredo's tenure was the most challenging. "The initial part, until we managed to create a dynamic in our daily work, was the most complicated," he explained. "Good results later helped. We managed to enter a positive phase and prolong it throughout the season."
The turning point came as victories began to accumulate, significantly boosting player motivation. This created a "positive snowball effect" that ultimately led to their promotion. The team's trajectory was remarkable; they went from being close to the relegation zone to climbing to the top of the table.
An Unbeaten Run
A significant factor in their success was an impressive six-month unbeaten streak following Figueiredo's appointment. "I think the big click was that. It wasn't a click from one game, but rather a long period where, week after week, we were winning or managing to get points," he commented. The visual of climbing the league table, from near the bottom to the promotion spots, served as a powerful motivator.
Looking Ahead to the Final
With promotion secured, the team's focus shifted to the Campeonato de Portugal final. Figueiredo outlined a strategy of setting objectives one at a time. After achieving the primary goal of promotion, the next target was to reach the final at the Jamor stadium, which they also accomplished. Now, the aim is to win the trophy.
From Player to Coach
Figueiredo's transition to coaching was a natural progression after ending his playing career. Having been part of the Leça squad for the two previous seasons, he was keen to remain involved in football. "I had already decided I was going to end my playing career. I didn't know exactly what I wanted to do immediately, but one thing I was sure of was my desire to continue in football," he stated. He saw the role of an assistant coach at Leça, a club where he had formed strong bonds, as an attractive prospect.
Adapting to the New Role
The initial period of transitioning from teammate to coach presented some humorous moments. Figueiredo admitted that he and his assistant, André Leão, who also had played with some of the current squad, sometimes slipped into informal address with former colleagues. "At the beginning, due to my closeness with the players… sometimes you forgot and addressed some players you were very close to as 'mano' (bro) or the players themselves would call us by other names," he recalled. These moments eventually gave way to a more formal coach-player relationship.
Leça became the first team in the Campeonato de Portugal to achieve promotion to Liga 3. Their ascent was confirmed on the fourth matchday of the promotion phase after defeating Vianense 4-3. Following promotion, their attention turned to the Campeonato de Portugal final, where they will face Vitória de Sernache, the champion of the South zone. The final is scheduled for June 10th at 16:30.
