Nico Williams has emerged as a global icon while wearing the Athletic Bilbao jersey, a journey he describes as “incredible.” The winger’s impact has transcended borders, notably highlighted by his performance in the Euros where he scored in the final and received the MVP award. His success with Athletic also includes winning the Copa del Rey, where he was named the best player of the final, and reaching the Europa League semi-finals and a fourth-place finish in La Liga.

These achievements have attracted the attention of several top global clubs, yet Williams reaffirmed his commitment to Athletic by renewing his contract until 2035. He shared his sentiments in a report for ‘FourFourTwo’, an English football magazine, emphasizing the profound connection he feels to Bilbao and Athletic.

“For me, representing what Bilbao and Athletic are on a global level is incredible,” Williams stated.

A Defining Cup Victory

The Copa del Rey triumph holds a particularly special place in Williams’ career. He described the experience as “unbelievable” and the “most important day of my life.” The scenes in Bilbao, with the city filled with red-and-white jerseys, underscored the deep emotional resonance of the victory for the club and its supporters.

“That day was the most important day of my life. All my friends, all my family were there. Bilbao full of red-and-white shirts. That feeling from the people of Bilbao is incredible,” he added.

Despite a recent season hampered by a pubic bone issue, Williams remains a key figure for Athletic. The ‘FourFourTwo’ report also delves into the club’s unique philosophy, its renowned youth academy, Lezama, and how it adapts to modern football. The Williams brothers, Iñaki and Nico, are presented as prime examples of this philosophy. Iñaki, the elder brother and captain, with roots in Africa, embodies the club’s inclusive spirit.

Club Philosophy and Connection

Eneko Bóveda, director of Lezama, highlighted the symbolic representation that the Williams brothers bring to the club. “For me, there is no more symbolic representation than that open door for everyone from Euskal Herria, to have an opportunity, to be accepted, to be one more of our Athletic. And why not be the guys who score the goals that so many people celebrate,” Bóveda commented.

Nico Williams further emphasized the “brutal” connection with the fans, stating that experiencing it at San Mamés is a must for anyone to understand. He also noted the “closeness” between the first team and the academy.

“For me, Athletic is everything. It’s family. It has given me everything, both to my brother and to my family. I love it with all my heart,” concluded the forward.
