Sampaoli’s frank self-criticism after losing Talleres debut: “The team was apathetic in the first half”

Jorge Sampaoli’s return to Argentine club football after 26 years began with a defeat and a blunt self-assessment. His Talleres side lost 1-0 to Newell’s Old Boys in the Clausura opener at the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa in Rosario, and the former Argentina and Chile coach did not spare his team – or himself – from criticism.

“The team was apathetic in the first half,” Sampaoli said in his post-match press conference. “After Newell’s goal, we created many chances, but the overall performance in the opening 45 minutes is something we need to resolve.” The comment was a clear reference to the lack of intensity and energy his players showed before the break.

The match was Sampaoli’s first in charge of Talleres after taking over during the pre-season. A key moment in the match was the penalty that gave Newell’s their lead. Sampaoli was direct about the defensive failure: “The central defenders had no communication, the penalty could have been avoided. It’s a matter of time before they start functioning as a unit.”

He also noted that centre-back Santiago Fernández, who had been carrying a knock, was eventually substituted. The injury and the lack of coordination between the backline contributed to the defensive error. Sampaoli made clear that the defensive structure is still a work in progress.

Youth academy focus moving forward

Sampaoli also addressed squad composition. When asked about potential reinforcements, he said: “Since we arrived at the club, we have been looking closely at the youth divisions to develop players. I have to find solutions within the club. Anyone who comes in now will struggle to adapt to a different system – we are already struggling with the players we have been working with. I will bet on the players who are here.”

This statement signals a clear intention to rely on Talleres’ academy rather than a heavy influx of new signings in the short term. It also reflects the reality that the squad is still learning Sampaoli’s tactical demands, and he prefers to work with the current group rather than introduce more unfamiliar faces.

The match itself was a game of transitions, a style that Sampaoli acknowledged suited Newell’s more than his own side. “The intention is to install a style of play that allows us to dominate the match,” he said. “But we ended up in a transition game, and Newell’s were more comfortable in that.”

Sampaoli’s first outing with Talleres ended in defeat, but the second-half performance, even with ten men, offered some encouragement. The coach’s detailed self-criticism shows he is not afraid to demand better from his players, and his decision to look inward for solutions suggests a long-term approach.

But Sampaoli’s track record of turning around teams and his emphasis on discipline suggest he will not let the poor start define the campaign. The Clausura is long, and this debut, while disappointing, is only the first step.
