Sarri Threatens Lazio Boycott Over Midday Rome Derby Scheduling

Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri has voiced strong opposition to the potential scheduling of the upcoming Rome Derby against AS Roma for Sunday at midday, suggesting his team should "refuse to show up" if forced to play at that time. Sarri’s comments came after Lazio's Coppa Italia final defeat to Inter Milan, where he also reflected on his team's tactical approach and their challenging season.

The controversy stems from a clash between Lega Serie A and local authorities regarding fixture scheduling. The Rome Derby is currently caught in a dispute over whether it should be played on Sunday at 12:00 local time or Monday evening. This scheduling conflict is exacerbated by the Italian Open men’s singles tennis tournament final, which is set to take place in the same Foro Italico complex as the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday afternoon, raising concerns about crowd management and logistical strain.

Coppa Italia Final Reflection

Sarri's outspoken remarks followed a disappointing Coppa Italia final for Lazio, where they were defeated 3-0 by Inter Milan. The coach, observing from the stands due to a touchline ban, acknowledged Inter's technical superiority but lamented his side's early errors that contributed to their downfall. Adam Marusic's own goal and a Nuno Tavares mistake leading to Lautaro Martinez's tap-in effectively sealed Lazio's fate.

"We had prepared the match by lowering the press in the first half, because we noticed on Saturday that Inter were less aggressive in the second half, it was not a level they could sustain for 90 minutes," Sarri told Sport Mediaset. "Unfortunately, during an otherwise very organised first half, we gifted Inter both goals and made everything more difficult for ourselves." He added that despite attempts to recover and create chances, they were unable to convert.

Tactical Decisions and Player Fitness

Sarri also elaborated on his tactical choices, particularly the use of Patric in midfield to cover for the not-fully-fit Nicolò Rovella. Rovella, having been out for most of the season, was deemed not ready for a full 90 minutes, leading to the decision to start Patric. Sarri had hoped for an extended 120-minute final, which might have allowed Rovella more time to impact the game, but a calf issue for Patric necessitated a half-time change.

The Coppa Italia represented Lazio's last chance to qualify for the Europa League, a goal that now seems out of reach given their struggles in Serie A. With Inter already in the Champions League, the fifth and sixth-placed teams in Serie A will secure Europa League spots, while seventh will enter the Conference League.

When questioned about his future at Lazio, Sarri remained dismissive, stating, "I have zero interest about my future at this moment. Besides which, if it is in discussion, it is on both sides." This implies a mutual consideration regarding his tenure, rather than a unilateral decision by the club. He expressed sadness for his players and the returning fans, who had ended their months-long boycott of home games – a protest aimed at President Claudio Lotito.

Sarri defended his team's performance, clarifying that their approach was not "timid" but a deliberate choice not to press Inter too high to avoid being caught out by their goalkeeper's passes. He stressed that individual errors, rather than tactical failings, were the primary cause of their defeat.

The main thrust of Sarri's post-match comments, however, was directed at the scheduling of the Derby della Capitale. "My feeling is that I’ll come on Monday, but if they want to play the derby at midday on a Sunday, I’m not coming. They can do it themselves," Sarri declared.

He heavily criticised Lega Serie A for what he termed "a series of errors," referencing previous scheduling conflicts such as the Turin Derby coinciding with the ATP tennis finals.
