Søren Tengstedt is embracing a new phase in his Go Ahead Eagles career, as he is now the only Danish player remaining in the squad following the recent departure of Jakob Breum. Breum’s transfer to French Ligue 2 side Saint-Étienne marks the end of a significant partnership for Tengstedt, who is determined to make his mark this season in Deventer.

“A whole season playing and doing well for this club, that’s what I want,” Tengstedt stated, reflecting on his ambitions for the upcoming campaign.

Por que importa

The departure of Breum, along with fellow Dane Aske Adelgaard who moved to FC Twente, leaves Tengstedt as the sole representative of his nationality at Go Ahead Eagles. While he humorously suggested the club should “quickly get another Dane,” Tengstedt acknowledged that the team dynamic is more important than nationality.

“No, that doesn’t bother me much,” he said. “There are still a lot of nice guys in the team.”

Tengstedt admitted he will miss Breum, with whom he formed a close bond since his own arrival at Go Ahead Eagles in the winter of 2024. The pair, initially strangers, quickly developed a strong connection, sharing meals and finding common ground both on and off the pitch.

“It’s always nice to meet someone at a new club who speaks your language,” Tengstedt recalled. “The day I signed at Go Ahead, we went straight out for dinner. We didn’t know each other at all before, although we had played against each other. We just clicked. We found each other at Go Ahead and I quickly noticed that we got along well. Jakob is a calm and nice person, just like me. I will definitely miss him.”

Breum had been contemplating a move after a successful season with Go Ahead Eagles, which included cup success. His transfer to Saint-Étienne, a club in the French second tier, has now materialized.

“I am very happy for him,” Tengstedt said of his former teammate. “Of course, I am also sorry that he is leaving, but this move is deserved, and we will still speak regularly. He deserves it after so many good years here. I am very curious to see how he will do there and will definitely follow him.”

The exit of Breum, who had become an integral part of Go Ahead Eagles as their undisputed number 10, presents a significant opportunity for Tengstedt. The attacking midfielder was originally brought to the club in the winter of 2024 to fill that role. However, injuries and a measure of bad luck have hampered his ability to consistently display his talents in that position.

Breum’s emergence as the team’s primary attacking midfielder was somewhat unplanned, occurring after former coach Paul Simonis experimented with the lineup. This tactical shift proved successful, cementing Breum’s place in the team. Now, with Breum’s departure, Tengstedt is poised to step into the spotlight and fulfill the role he was initially signed for.
