Marc ter Stegen will not be able to feature for Ajax in their upcoming Conference League qualifiers after his loan move from FC Barcelona could not be completed before the UEFA registration deadline. The German goalkeeper’s temporary switch to the Amsterdam club was contingent on finalising terms before the midnight cut-off on Friday, July 17th.

With the deadline passing, Ter Stegen will remain with Barcelona and will not be eligible to represent Ajax in the second qualifying round of the competition. The Dutch side is set to face Serbian outfit Vojvodina de Novi Sad in their first tie.

Ajax European Ambitions

The first leg of Ajax’s tie against Vojvodina is scheduled for Thursday, July 23rd, with the return fixture taking place on Thursday, July 30th, at the Johan Cruyff Arena. Vojvodina advanced to this stage by defeating Ferencvaros in the previous round of the Europa League.

Should an agreement between Ajax and Barcelona be reached at a later date, and if Míchel Sánchez’s side successfully navigates their current tie, Ter Stegen could potentially feature in the third qualifying round. The registration deadline for that stage is set for midnight on July 31st. A further deadline for the fourth and final qualifying round exists on August 14th, allowing for player registrations during the ongoing transfer window.

Ajax faces a challenging path to the ‘league phase’ of the Conference League, requiring them to overcome three qualifying rounds. The draw for the league phase is scheduled for August 28th in Monte Carlo.

Domestic Aims

In addition to their European aspirations, Ajax will also begin their Eredivisie campaign. Their domestic season opener is scheduled for Sunday, August 9th, at home against Zwolle. This marks an early start for the Dutch league, commencing just three weeks after the conclusion of the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, where the Netherlands were eliminated in the Round of 16 by Morocco.
