Turkey may have been eliminated from the World Cup after two successive defeats, but their final group stage match against the United States concluded with a sense of achievement and pride, according to head coach Vincenzo Montella.

Montella’s Men Show Fighting Spirit

The encounter with the USA was a matter of pride for Turkey, having already secured their exit from the tournament. Despite the circumstances, Montella emphasized the team’s resilience and character. “We return to our country with our heads held high,” Montella stated after the final whistle. “The way we came back quickly after conceding a goal is something you only see in teams with real team spirit. Tonight, all the players showed their qualities.”

The Turkish coach was visibly emotional, attributing his feelings to the support of the fans and the team’s performance. “We played for so many American fans. We couldn’t have done that if we weren’t a strong team. I am very happy for the Turkish people and for our president. There were also things that happened that were not fair. I became very emotional at the end of the match. This game was worth a thousand victories.”

Montella acknowledged the challenges faced by his squad, including a compressed preparation period after qualifying through the play-offs. “We did not always work under ideal circumstances and had to constantly adapt. Because we only qualified via the play-offs, there was little time to organize everything. This was also true for the other European countries that came through the play-offs. We did not have luck on our side in the first two matches. With at least one draw, everything would have been different.”

He added, “I wanted to see how the team would react tonight. Of course, we are disappointed that we have been eliminated, but at the same time, we can be proud. The football we have shown today is important for our pride.” This marked Turkey’s first World Cup appearance in 24 years, and Montella expressed confidence in a quicker return. “I tried to take on the role of a psychologist as well. The players have shown how much character they have. I am sure it will not be another 24 years before Turkey plays in a World Cup again. We will be back much sooner.”

Pochettino Reflects on Group Stage Success

On the American side, head coach Mauricio Pochettino acknowledged the disappointment of the defeat but maintained perspective. The United States secured first place in the group despite the loss. “Turkey is out. I don’t understand why it feels like we are going home and Turkey is continuing,” Pochettino joked. “Our first goal was to qualify for the knockout phase. Then we wanted to finish as group winners, and we succeeded. No one has congratulated us yet on winning such a difficult group.”

While pleased with topping the group, Pochettino stressed that it is only the first step. “Winning three games is not what writes history. Becoming World Cup champions, that is what writes history.”
