The United States is reportedly considering a bid to host the men’s 2038 FIFA World Cup, according to Andrew Giuliani, executive director of the White House’s World Cup task force. This potential bid comes as FIFA contemplates further expanding the tournament format.

The US is currently a co-host of the 2026 World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico, an event that has already seen the tournament grow from 32 to 48 teams. Giuliani suggested that the country’s infrastructure and experience make it well-suited for an even larger event.

Por que importa

“When you think that this World Cup may at some point expand out to 64 teams, I think the United States can handle it,” Giuliani stated. He also indicated a pragmatic approach, emphasizing the need to successfully host the current tournament before fully committing to a future bid. “Let me make sure we get through this World Cup on 19 July before we make our pitch for 2038 or other ones,” he added.

The 2038 World Cup represents the next cycle for which a bidding process will be formally opened. The upcoming 2030 tournament is set to be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, with initial matches also taking place in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay to commemorate the competition’s centenary. Subsequently, Saudi Arabia is slated to host the 2034 World Cup.

Contexto

Giuliani highlighted the United States’ existing infrastructure, including numerous stadiums, as a significant advantage. He contrasted this with the substantial investment often required by other nations to build facilities. “We have the stadiums built, so for the US, compared to other host nations, where it costs tens and tens of billions of dollars, you know, it cost us a couple of billion,” he explained.

Despite some reported controversies surrounding the current 2026 World Cup co-hosted by the US, such as travel advisories issued by rights groups and issues related to visa denials for members of Iran’s backroom staff, Giuliani expressed optimism about the US’s ability to host again. He noted that the current tournament has showcased the US as a welcoming nation with considerable infrastructure.

“There’s no better country that’s positioned to host a World Cup than the United States, and I think we’re seeing that on social media,” Giuliani commented. He also linked the current World Cup’s success to national pride, stating, “It’s so wonderful to see the world’s love affair with the United States of America over our 250th birthday. It’s been very gratifying.”
