VfB Stuttgart Hold 10-Man Atletico Madrid to Champions League Draw
Jamie Leweling scored but Stuttgart could not hold on as Julián Alvarez equalised for 10-man Atletico Madrid in a 1-1 Champions League draw.

VfB Stuttgart extended their unbeaten start to the UEFA Champions League group stage to three matches, earning a 1-1 draw at home against a 10-man Atletico Madrid side at the MHPArena.
The result leaves Stuttgart on seven points from three games, putting them in a strong position in the group standings. For Atletico, the point keeps them in contention, but Diego Simeone will be concerned by his team’s second-half discipline after Morten Hjulmand’s red card.
First half: Stuttgart pressure pays off
Sebastian Hoeness made three changes to his Stuttgart lineup from the previous Bundesliga outing, bringing in Maximilian Mittelstädt, Grischa Prömel and Chris Führich. Atletico, meanwhile, started with Alejandro Grimaldo, Álex Baena, Marcos Llorente and Julián Álvarez.
The hosts dominated the opening exchanges. Jan Oblak was forced into early saves from Bilal El Khannouss and Joshua Vagnoman, while Angelo Stiller and Jamie Leweling also tested the Atletico goalkeeper. Mittelstädt was booked in the 17th minute for a challenge on Giuliano Simeone.
The breakthrough came in the 36th minute. Marc Pubill lost possession to Stiller near his own box, and the ball found Leweling, who drove a low shot into the bottom corner to make it 1-0. Atletico showed little threat before the break, and Stuttgart went into half-time with a deserved lead.
Second half: Alvarez strikes back, Hjulmand sees red
Atletico responded immediately after the restart. Simeone introduced Ademola Lookman for Jonathan David at half-time, and the substitution paid dividends within two minutes. In the 47th minute, Lookman found space on the left and crossed low into the middle, where Julián Alvarez swept the ball home from close range to level the scores.
Stuttgart pushed back. Lorenz Assignon replaced Vagnoman, and Führich came close with a curling effort that flew narrowly wide. The match turned decisively in the 64th minute when Morten Hjulmand was shown a straight red card for a high, open-soled challenge on Stiller in midfield.
With a one-man advantage, Stuttgart pressed for a winner. Prömel headed wide, Jeff Chabot narrowly missed from a corner, and Prömel forced another save from Oblak. In stoppage time, substitute Dženan Pejčinović headed wide as the hosts could not find a second goal.

What this means for Stuttgart
Seven points from three Champions League matches is a strong return for Stuttgart, who are competing in Europe’s top competition for the first time since the 2009-10 season. The draw keeps them firmly in contention for a place in the knockout stages, with matches against Galatasaray and two remaining group fixtures to come.
The performance also showed Stuttgart’s ability to compete with a top European side. They created numerous chances, dominated possession for long periods, and were unfortunate not to take full advantage of the red card. The defensive lapse that allowed Alvarez to score will be a concern, but the overall display was encouraging.
For Atletico, the point keeps them in the group fight, but the red card and the inability to hold onto a lead will frustrate Simeone. The disciplinary issue adds to a growing list of concerns for the Spanish side, who have now picked up two red cards in their last three matches across all competitions.
Looking ahead
Stuttgart return to Champions League action on 3 November when they travel to Turkish giants Galatasaray. Before that, they face a Bundesliga fixture against RB Leipzig as they look to maintain their strong start to the season.
