Sergio also revealed Ronaldo’s clandestine efforts to build strength, sneaking into the training centre gym for extra weightlifting sessions with a teammate, even after being reprimanded by a coach. “Cristiano carried on doing it regardless,” Sergio noted. “It showed that even then, as a kid, he had the mindset he later became known for. He was different.”

While Ronaldo’s drive was undeniable, Sergio acknowledged that his intense competitiveness could sometimes lead to friction with teammates. “His will to win sometimes led to conflict with team-mates. He wanted everyone to be perfect like he was. He demanded a lot of himself and he expected others to do the same,” Sergio explained.

This demanding nature meant that “not everyone liked him” initially, and some took “against him.” Sergio suggested that Ronaldo’s popularity grew significantly only after he started being called up to the first team. Despite any personality clashes, Sergio remained supportive. “I was always on his side, though,” he said. “Like Cristiano, I was a natural competitor; I loved to pit myself against him in training.”

Off the pitch, Sergio remembers Ronaldo as a “top guy” who was “always keen to help” and enjoyed pranks, citing incidents like hiding socks or putting heat cream in a teammate’s underwear.
