Zé Roberto Reveals PlayStation Distraction Hampered Real Madrid Stint
Former Brazilian international Zé Roberto has opened up about how his dream of owning a PlayStation significantly impacted his brief spell at Real Madrid, admitting it was a major distraction.

Former Brazilian midfielder Zé Roberto has revealed that his desire to own a PlayStation played a significant role in his unsuccessful stint at Real Madrid. The revelation comes as the player celebrates his 52nd birthday.
Difficult Start in Spain
Zé Roberto joined Real Madrid before making his mark in La Liga. He described his initial experience in Spain as very difficult, citing the challenges of adapting to a different country, culture, and style of play. “I went to Real Madrid, but the impact was very difficult because I found myself in a different country, with a different culture and a different way of playing,” he admitted.
Interest from Italy and Germany
Before committing to Real Madrid, Zé Roberto was also on the radar of Italian clubs. Lazio had reportedly reached an agreement with his then-club, Portuguesa, while Parma also showed interest. His agent also mentioned interest from Bayer Leverkusen.
The PlayStation Factor
Despite the other options, Zé Roberto ultimately chose Real Madrid. However, his time in Spain was short-lived, with video games being a major contributing factor to his struggles. “Video games destabilized me quite a bit,” he confessed. “One of my dreams was to have a PlayStation. And we bought one. We spent our days together and, in the evening, we played video games. It’s an aspect that distracts many athletes today and makes them lose concentration.”
Return to Brazil and German Success
After just fifteen appearances for Real Madrid, Zé Roberto returned to Brazil to play for Flamengo. This move was followed by a transfer to Bayer Leverkusen, the club where he truly revitalized his career. In Germany, Zé Roberto became a key player, helping the team reach the 2002 Champions League final, which they ultimately lost to Real Madrid. This success in Germany subsequently led to a move to Bayern Munich, where he enjoyed a highly successful period from 2002 to 2009, with a brief return to Santos in between.
