Malvinas Veteran Reunited with Letter Stolen 42 Years Ago
Héctor Daniel Ponce, a veteran of the Falklands War, has recovered a heartfelt letter he sent to his parents from the islands, which was stolen from his family 42 years ago and recently surfaced for auction online.

A deeply moving moment unfolded as Héctor Daniel Ponce, a veteran of the Falklands War, was reunited with a letter he penned from the islands during the 1982 conflict. The correspondence, originally sent to his parents, was stolen from his family 42 years ago and recently reappeared on eBay, leading to its recovery.
The letter, written by a 19-year-old Ponce on April 29, 1982, from the Malvinas, has now returned to Villa Mercedes, San Luis, to the Ponce family home. This time, a 64-year-old veteran, Ponce, presented the letter to his mother, who originally received it in 1982. The reunion was captured in a touching video, showing his mother weeping with emotion as she reread the words from her son.
A Deceptive Theft
The letter’s journey is marked by a significant deception. In 1984, two years after the war’s end, Ponce’s correspondence, which included this letter, was taken from his family. A person, feigning injury and claiming to be working on a book about the war with the renowned Argentine writer Ernesto Sábato, tricked Ponce’s family into handing over 17 letters. The individual falsely asserted that Sábato needed original letters from conscript soldiers for his project.
This act of deceit meant that Ponce and his family were deprived of this vital connection. For Ponce, these letters were more than just words; they were a lifeline, a confirmation of his survival during the conflict. “The only way to say we were alive was the letter. When they received the letter, in Argentina they knew that until the moment you sent it, you were alive. And for me, sending them meant thinking that it would be the last letter I would send and the last sign that I was alive here, in the war. The importance those letters had!” Ponce shared in a previous interview.
Rediscovery and Recovery
The letter resurfaced recently when a collector named Jesús Castro, an enthusiast of the Falklands War, contacted Ponce via Facebook. Castro alerted Ponce that one of his letters was up for auction on eBay. Acting swiftly, Ponce contacted eBay, which promptly removed the auction and facilitated the letter’s return.
The online auction had seen bids exceeding $300 before it was halted. The swift intervention by eBay ensured that this precious piece of personal history would not be lost to a private collector.
A Mother’s Tears
The video of the reunion shows Ponce’s mother, identified as “Abuela Tita” by background voices, overcome with emotion. She trembles as she carefully unfolds the aerogram, tears streaming down her face. “We have to get the other letters, but we already have one!” she exclaims, her voice thick with feeling. Ponce consoles her, expressing joy that the letter is “impeccable, well preserved.” He also humorously notes the coincidence of the name Jesús, who helped him find the letter and sent it to him.
For Ponce, the recovery is a profound emotional experience. “These things are caresses to the soul,” he concluded. The letter itself, written in neat handwriting, begins with “queridos viejos” (dear old ones) and describes his days on the islands just before the first British attack.
