UEFA is set to significantly enhance the financial rewards for clubs competing in the Champions League, announcing a total distribution of nearly €2.5 billion to the 36 teams that will participate in the revamped tournament. This substantial increase in prize money is designed to further enrich the competition and benefit clubs across Europe.

New Distribution Model

The €2.5 billion in net revenue available to participating clubs will be allocated across three main pillars: a starting fee, performance-based bonuses, and a new “value pillar” which combines historical performance and market pool elements.

Starting Fee
Each of the 36 clubs qualifying for the group stage will receive a base fee of €18.62 million. This amount is divided into an advance payment of €17.87 million and a final balance of €750,000. This uniform starting fee ensures a baseline financial return for all participating teams.

Performance Bonuses
During the group stage, clubs will be rewarded for their on-field results with €2.1 million for each victory and €700,000 for each draw. Beyond match results, a bonus structure based on the final group standings has also been introduced. This system divides the total available bonus pool into 666 equal shares, with the lowest-ranked team receiving one share (€275,000) and the highest-ranked team receiving 36 shares.

Knockout Stage Payouts
Clubs progressing through the knockout rounds will see their earnings increase significantly:
* Qualification for the knockout play-offs: €1 million per club.
* Qualification for the Round of 16: €11 million per club.
* Qualification for the Quarter-finals: €12.5 million per club.
* Qualification for the Semi-finals: €15 million per club.
* Qualification for the Final: €18.5 million per club.
* Winning the Final: An additional €6.5 million.

The “Value Pillar” Explained

The new “value pillar” represents a significant shift, merging the previous market pool and coefficient rankings into a single, more complex system. This pillar accounts for 35% of the total distributable revenue (€853 million) and is divided into two components: the European part and the non-European part.

The allocation between these two parts is directly proportional to the actual revenue generated from the sale of television rights in UEFA markets (European part) and all other global markets (non-European part). As of July 1, 2024, the split is set at 73% for the European component and 27% for the non-European component, based on global TV rights contracts for the entire cycle. This approach aims to better reflect the commercial value and global reach of the competition.

Impact on European Clubs

The increased prize money is expected to have a considerable impact on the financial health of participating clubs, allowing them to reinvest in their squads, infrastructure, and youth development. This move by UEFA underscores the growing commercial appeal of the Champions League and its importance as a revenue generator for elite European football. For clubs like Inter, Napoli, Roma, and Como, who are mentioned as potential beneficiaries, this financial boost could be crucial for their competitive ambitions.
