Ángel Correa returns to Argentine football

River Plate have officially announced the signing of Ángel Correa from Tigres, making the 30-year-old forward the most expensive purchase in the club’s 125-year history. The deal, worth $15 million under all concepts, secures 100% of Correa’s registration. The announcement, made on Friday afternoon, ends a long negotiation that began weeks ago and finally gives manager Eduardo Coudet a high-profile attacking reinforcement.

Correa, who won the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, will undergo a medical in the coming hours before signing his contract. He is expected to join the squad immediately as River prepare for the second half of the Argentine season and the Copa Libertadores knockout rounds.

Record fee breaks the 2018 benchmark

The $15 million outlay surpasses the $14 million River paid São Paulo for Lucas Pratto in 2018, which had stood as the club’s record signing. That deal included performance bonuses, while the Correa transfer is described as a flat fee covering the full transfer. The previous top three also includes Kevin Castaño, the Colombian midfielder bought from Krasnodar for $13.8 million in March 2025, and Sebastián Driussi, who returned from Austin FC for $10 million in the same window.

River’s recent spending has been aggressive. The club also paid eight million euros for Maximiliano Salas from Racing Club, $8 million for Miguel Borja in 2022, $7 million for Aníbal Moreno late last year, and $6.3 million for Rodrigo Villagra. Additionally, the loan deal for Lucas Beltrán carries a $500,000 loan fee and a $6.7 million purchase obligation for 54% of his economic rights, to be executed in early 2027 – a total package around $7.25 million.

Correa’s career path and what he brings

Ángel Correa began his professional career at San Lorenzo, then moved to Atlético Madrid in 2014, where he spent eight seasons. He joined Tigres in 2022 and played two full seasons in Mexico, scoring 14 goals and providing 11 assists in 65 appearances across all competitions. At international level, he was part of Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning squad and also played in the 2024 Copa América.

At River, Correa is expected to play as a second striker or as a winger, adding versatility to Coudet’s attack. His close control, dribbling and ability to link play should complement the existing forward line, which includes Driussi, Borja, and Facundo Colidio. The club had been searching for a proven goalscorer after a mixed first half of the season, and Correa’s arrival is seen as a major statement of intent.

Why this deal matters for River and Argentine football

The transfer is a clear signal that River Plate, under president Jorge Brito, remain willing to break the bank for top-tier talent. The club has consistently invested heavily in the transfer market since returning to the top flight, and the Correa signing is the most expensive in its history. It also brings a World Cup winner back to the domestic league, which raises the profile of the Argentine Primera División.

For the fans, the signing is a morale boost after a season that has seen the team struggle for consistency. Correa’s experience in European and Mexican football, combined with his international pedigree, should give River a sharper edge in the second half of the campaign. The club also faces a Libertadores knockout tie later this year, and Correa’s big-game experience could prove decisive.

The transfer also reinforces the trend of major Argentine clubs paying record fees for established players, as River continue to compete financially with Brazilian sides and European clubs for top South American talent.
