Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Argentina midfielder Valentín Barco, bringing the 22-year-old back to the Premier League as a very different player from the left-back who left Boca Juniors. The London club presented him on Sunday as a “versatile midfielder” and posted a short welcome video on its official channels, with the move covered by Clarin Deportes.

Chelsea announce Barco signing

In its official announcement, Chelsea said: “Barco, 22, began his career at Boca Juniors in Argentina. He debuted as a professional at 16 after coming through the youth categories and won numerous titles before moving to England in 2024 to join Brighton & Hove Albion.”

The transfer was made easier because Barco’s previous club, Strasbourg, belongs to BlueCo, the same ownership group that controls Chelsea. The move gives Barco his fourth European club after Brighton, Sevilla and Strasbourg.

Barco, who was part of Argentina’s squad at the 2026 World Cup, now joins a Chelsea midfield that already includes Enzo Fernández and Ecuador’s Moisés Caicedo. The club is preparing for the new Premier League season under Spanish coach Xabi Alonso.

From Boca left-back to central midfielder

Barco came through Boca’s youth system as one of the club’s most promising left-sided players. He made his professional debut at 16 and won several titles before joining Brighton at the start of 2024.

His first spell in English football lasted only a few months. After failing to find regular minutes at Sevilla, Barco was loaned by Brighton to Strasbourg. A year later he signed permanently with the French club, and it was there that his role changed. He left the flank and moved inside as a central midfielder, becoming far more influential in the final third.

The Strasbourg numbers that changed his profile

Barco played 58 matches for Strasbourg and scored three goals with 11 assists, according to the Clarin Deportes report. Those numbers help explain why Chelsea chose to bring him back to the Premier League as a midfielder rather than as a full-back.

Chelsea’s busy transfer window

Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season and is rebuilding its squad this summer. On Saturday, the club announced the signing of veteran forward Danny Welbeck from Brighton. That followed arrivals earlier in the window: Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace, Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, Marco Palestra from Atalanta, Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg and Geovany Quenda from Sporting Lisbon.
