Cagliari forward Sebastiano Esposito has revealed that he specifically asked the club to give him a leadership role, describing the Sardinian environment as a “national team” with a passionate fanbase that pushes him to leave his comfort zone. In an interview published by La Gazzetta dello Sport on Saturday and relayed by TuttoMercatoWeb, the 24-year-old also detailed the unlikely start of his strong rapport with coach Fabio Pisacane—a touchline disagreement that turned into mutual respect.

Esposito, who joined Cagliari from Inter Milan last summer, said he wanted the move precisely because of the challenge. “I don’t love the comfort zone. I seek challenges. And Cagliari, coming from Inter, was the most difficult one,” he told the paper. “It’s a warm crowd, just the way I like it, with a fanbase that pushes us a lot in our stadium. There’s an entire population behind us. Cagliari is a national team.”

The former Inter academy graduate has quickly settled into a squad he describes as “healthy and eager to work,” but he acknowledges that staying in Serie A will be tougher than arriving. “Arriving is easy, confirming yourself is difficult,” he said.

A leader’s request

Esposito explained that after a conversation with the club hierarchy, he explicitly asked to be given more responsibility. “After a meeting with the club, I asked to be more responsible in my role. I asked to be a leader,” he said. “Like Deiola, like Caprile. I like it—helping them and also scolding them, because even though I’m only 24, I have some matches under my belt.”

The reference to Alessandro Deiola and Simone Caprile, two established figures in the Cagliari dressing room, underlines the kind of vocal presence Esposito intends to adopt. The club’s decision to entertain his request suggests they see the same potential for on-field authority that the player himself perceives.

The clash that built a bond

Perhaps the most striking part of the interview concerns Esposito’s relationship with head coach Fabio Pisacane. The two now speak in Neapolitan dialect, a shared language that reflects their southern roots. But their connection did not begin smoothly.

“It all started with a clash,” Esposito recalled. “During Verona-Cagliari, he made me warm up but then didn’t put me in. There was a disagreement. So I went to his little office and asked for an explanation. We confronted each other. He’s straightforward, real. We understood each other, and now it’s a good relationship.”

The incident, which took place earlier in the season, became a turning point. Pisacane, a former defender who took over the Cagliari bench midway through the campaign, is known for his direct approach. Esposito’s willingness to confront him publicly appears to have earned the coach’s respect rather than resentment.

Why it matters for Cagliari and Serie A followers

Esposito’s remarks give an unusually candid look inside a Serie A dressing room. His willingness to publicly claim a leadership role—and the club’s openness to it—suggests that Cagliari is building its identity around players who take ownership of the team’s fate. For a side that has fought to stay in the top flight, such internal dynamics can be as important as tactical adjustments.

The story also sheds light on Pisacane’s man-management style. The coach’s ability to turn a confrontation into a productive relationship may be a key factor in Cagliari’s survival push. For fans tracking the club’s progress, the Esposito-Pisacane axis is one to watch.
