China has officially put into operation the “Ning Yuan Dian Kun,” its largest and the world’s most advanced 100% electric container ship. This innovative vessel, measuring 127.8 meters in length and 21.6 meters in width, with a displacement of 10,000 tons, is now navigating the busy trade route between the ports of Ningbo-Zhoushan and Jiaxing in Zhejiang Province.

The ship has the capacity to carry up to 742 containers and operates entirely on modular electric batteries, signaling a major stride in the electrification of maritime transport.

Technological Advancements

The “Ning Yuan Dian Kun” is equipped with 10 interchangeable battery containers, totaling an impressive energy capacity of nearly 19,000 kWh (19 MWh). This significant energy storage powers two permanent magnet synchronous motors, each with an output of 875 kW, engineered for maximum energy efficiency and minimal power loss during operation.

Beyond its zero-emission propulsion, the electric ship significantly reduces noise and vibration levels, which are critical factors for port environments and coastal ecosystems. The operator, Ningbo Ocean Shipping, estimates that the vessel can prevent the emission of up to 1,462 tons of CO₂ annually. Further enhancing its efficiency, the ship’s aerodynamic design is projected to reduce wind resistance by 15% to 20%.

Innovative Charging System

A key innovation of the “Ning Yuan Dian Kun” is its dual charging system. The ship can connect to the high-voltage power grid while in port, or alternatively, its depleted battery containers can be rapidly swapped with fully charged ones. This system drastically cuts down waiting times and addresses one of the historical challenges in electrifying maritime transport – lengthy charging periods.

Intelligent Navigation and Automation

The vessel also features advanced cloud-connected intelligent navigation. This includes real-time monitoring, automatic collision avoidance, smart route planning, and automated docking and undocking systems. China is also utilizing the “Ning Yuan Dian Kun” as a testbed for future partially autonomous operations on high-density logistics corridors.

Strategic Importance for Regional Trade

While its 742-container capacity is modest compared to ultra-large vessels, the “Ning Yuan Dian Kun” is designed for the feeder transport segment. These are smaller ships that distribute cargo between regional ports, a crucial role where larger ships cannot operate. This segment accounts for approximately one-fifth of the container shipping industry’s polluting emissions.

China’s broader strategy is to lead the transition towards zero-emission logistics corridors and ports. The Ningbo-Zhoushan port, where the ship operates, is one of the world’s busiest maritime hubs, handling around 1.4 billion tons of cargo and over 43 million TEUs in 2025.

Government Support and Future Expansion

The Chinese government has included this project in its national list of green and low-carbon technologies, aiming to create a replicable model for coastal routes. A second, identical vessel, named “Ning Yuan Dian Peng,” is slated to enter service later this year. This initiative positions China to gain a competitive edge in the electrification of short-distance maritime trade, potentially reshaping logistics costs, port competitiveness, and global supply chains in the coming years.
