Manuel Neuer suggests 2026/27 will be his final season at Bayern Munich

Manuel Neuer has all but confirmed that the 2026/27 Bundesliga season will be his last as a professional footballer. Speaking from Bayern Munich’s pre-season training camp in Tegernsee, the 40-year-old goalkeeper told reporters he expects to retire when his current contract expires at the end of the campaign.

Neuer signed a one-year extension with the record champions in May, keeping him at the club until summer 2027. He is now entering his 16th season at Bayern since joining from Schalke in 2011, and the hint marks the clearest public signal yet that his storied career is approaching its end.

What Neuer said

During an interview at the team’s training base in Bavaria, Neuer was asked about the possibility that the coming season could be his last.

“I don’t play the matches just to say, ‘This is my last game,’” he said. “It doesn’t matter whether this might have been my last time at one stadium or another – we’ll see. It certainly looks very much as though I’m going to retire.”

While he did not make a definitive announcement, the tone and wording strongly suggest that this season will serve as a farewell tour for one of the greatest goalkeepers in football history.

Bayern’s ambitions for 2026/27

Despite the potential for a personal finale, Neuer remains focused on team goals. Bayern won the Bundesliga for the 13th time in his career last season and also lifted the DFB Cup, but were eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semi-finals.

“Our goals are all the goals we can achieve,” Neuer explained. “We’ve always said throughout last season that every match is the most important one. That’s the mindset we’re taking into this season too – we want to beat everyone.”

He added that he believes the current squad has the quality to challenge on all fronts: “I believe we’ve had a good season and that, with this team, we have the potential to beat everyone and achieve all our goals.”

Goalkeeping succession plan

Bayern have been preparing for life after Neuer for several seasons. Young goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, who joined the club in early 2026, is widely seen as the long-term successor. Veteran Sven Ulreich remains a reliable deputy.

Neuer praised the goalkeeping unit and emphasised unity: “We’ll support one another; we’ve got a strong goalkeeping squad, including Ulle [Sven Ulreich] and the young goalkeepers. The important thing is that we help one another, that we push each other, and that we can always give our best for the team in goal.”

Bayern have not yet signed an established starting-calibre goalkeeper to replace Neuer, suggesting that the club may trust Urbig to step into the role when the time comes.

Neuer has made 545 appearances for Bayern Munich, winning 11 Bundesliga titles, two Champions League trophies, and countless other honours. He revolutionised the goalkeeping position with his sweeper-keeper style and was a key part of Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning squad.
